Jewish Book Week - Stefan Zweig & Julia Rabinowich

This year’s Jewish Book Week presents the work of two distinguished Austrian writers. Stefan Zweig (1881–1942) was a true cosmopolitan, at ease in the international republic of letters, dreaming of a depoliticised world, who saw all he believed in destroyed and could not stand it. Here, through texts, carefully chosen by Professor Rüdiger Görner, some translated into English for the very first time by Anthea Bell, we follow Zweig’s thoughts on literature, on what it means to be Jewish and on exiled life in London. The readings will be interspersed with live music drawn from Zweig’s vast collection of scores.

On Wednesday 2 March Austrian writer Julya Rabinowich will, together with Jenny Erpenbeck, take part in an event entitled Haunting memories and fractured identities. Two strikingly new voices, original and poetic, revisit the themes of loss and belonging. Both writers will tell us how they have made beautiful fiction out of painful experience.

Talk on German Film, Monday 21st February

I just wanted to remind you all that the next German Department talk is going to take place on Monday 21st - that's this coming Monday - at 17.30. It's by a final year PhD student from the University of Sheffield, and he'll be talking on German film and TV productions that have to do with the national socialist past. The title is:


"Love and War: History, Authenticity and Melodrama in teamWorx's Event Movies on the National Socialist Past"

FIRST "AUSTRIA DAY" AT KING'S

 About 30 students from the German Departments of King's College London and UCL attended the first Austrian Day at King's College London which took place on February 2, 2011. Guest speakers were Horst Simon (KCL) and Magadalena Heinich (University of Sheffield). Inbetween talks students had the chance to taste home-made Viennese Apfelstrudel and coffee from Austria.
At the end of the event the two winners of the creative writing competition "Schreibblockade - writer's block" were announced:

 Lucile Tronel (KCL) and George Morgan (UCL)

A Bavarian in Vienna: Horst Simon (KCL) talked about his very own experiences in Austria.

Magdalena Heinich (University of Sheffield) talked about the concept of the Austrian Kaffeehaus

 

Film and Literature Discussion in the German Department

There will be two guest speakers coming to the Department this term to talk about their work in German Studies. The first, Andrew Wormald, is a final-year PhD student from the University of Sheffield, and he’s going to talk about German film and TV production – specifically the ways in which it deals with the legacy of the German Past. For any of you that attended the film screenings in the “Remember Me” series last term, this talk will be of real interest, since he’ll also be talking about “Dresden”, the final film we showed last year.

The second speaker is Dr Uwe Schuette from Aston, and he’ll be talking on Heiner Mueller – so if you are interested in German 20th century drama, fiction and the GDR, then do come along.
