Translation Internship Opportunity in Stuttgart

Martin Crellin Copywriting and Translation is looking for graduates or final-year students of German to spend one or two months with the company in Ludwigsburg (15-20 mins from Stuttgart) as an intern.

Who we are
We are a niche translation firm providing high-quality English marketing and advertising copy. The most important aspect of our work is quality, not quantity – a surprisingly unusual phenomenon in the translation industry. Typically we translate brochures, presentations, adverts, slogans, flyers, storyboards, annual reports, product catalogues and press releases. We also offer copywriting services, so it's not solely translation.

Who we work for
Our clients include the world's leading vendor of enterprise software (SAP), Europe's number-two IT service provider (T-Systems), top magazine publishers like Condé Nast (Glamour, GQ) and Milchstrasse (Max, Amica, Fit for Fun), numerous ad agencies (JvM, Heye), fashion houses (Mustang Jeans, Bogner), and a whole host of creative companies.

What is an internship?
An internship is a one- or two-month, full-time employment contract that gives you the opportunity to get to grips with real-life translation. It also gives us the opportunity to nurture fresh talent without a huge upfront financial commitment.

Who can apply?
First and foremost, you must be a native speaker of English. Your German should be at an advanced level, and you should be either a final year/postgraduate languages/translation student, or be nearing the end of your year abroad, and have experience of living in Germany.

Show me the money
We provide a "subsistence-level" salary of 500 euros per month. We will also provide guidance on accommodation.

What is expected of me?
You will be expected to take on simple translation assignments, to learn how to improve your written work, and to build up your knowledge of the business and IT worlds. You will also have the opportunity to do some terminology and possibly translation memory work. Yes, there may be some admin and coffee-making, but we are not out to exploit you.

And what if I do a good job?
If we believe you have the potential to go far as a translator/copywriter, and if we think you will fit in well, we may offer you a one-year trainee contract (see our Website for more details).

How to apply
Please visit the internship page on our Website (http://www.crellin.de/deutsch/jobs/internships.htm) and translate the short news items into English. Send us the translations, along with a couple of paragraphs about yourself. Please avoid off-the-peg application blurb. Include your CV (plus a photo if you have one to hand) with a cover letter specifying potential dates. You can send your application (or any enquiries) by e-mail to recruitment@crellin.de (preferred) or by post to our mailing address.

HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS - THE CONCEPT OF HEIMAT IN NEW GERMAN CINEMA

While the British are said to be patriotic to the bone, they are lacking an exclusive term for the concept of HEIMAT (trans. homeland, belonging). In Germany and Austria the contrary seems to be the case. But even though the term HEIMAT in German-speaking countries exists in order to express that feeling of (be-)longing, one usually feels uncomfortable using it. In Film and media, however, the concept of HEIMAT appears to be more easily to grasp and the German-speaking countries produced great deal of so called Heimatfilme particularly after World War II but also well beyond that time. In the second series of our film even series we would like to draw our attention to that very German concept of HEIMAT and how it is been depicted in German and Austrian Heimatfilme made after World War II.

final event of this term: Tuesday, 29.03.2011
at 6.30 in room K.0.19 (Strand Campus)
Dr. Barbara Knorpp, Brunel University
"Kleine Heimat" (2007) - documentary produced by the German born anthropologist Dr. Barbara Knorpp
Introduction: Dr. Barbara Knorpp (Anthropology, Brunel University)
