HOME IS WHERE THE HEART IS - THE CONCEPT OF HEIMAT IN NEW GERMAN CINEMA

While the British are said to be patriotic to the bone, they are lacking an exclusive term for the concept of HEIMAT (trans. homeland, belonging). In Germany and Austria the contrary seems to be the case. But even though the term HEIMAT in German-speaking countries exists in order to express that feeling of (be-)longing, one usually feels uncomfortable using it. In Film and media, however, the concept of HEIMAT appears to be more easily to grasp and the German-speaking countries produced great deal of so called Heimatfilme particularly after World War II but also well beyond that time. In the second series of our film even series we would like to draw our attention to that very German concept of HEIMAT and how it is been depicted in German and Austrian Heimatfilme made after World War II.

Talk in the German Department: Sebald and Benjamin

There's another talk in the German Department this coming Monday (28th March): Dr Sarah Schmidt on W. G. Sebald ("Austerlitz", "Die Ausgewanderten") and Walter Benjamin - 17.30, in room K0.31, Strand Campus. ANNUAL GERMAN LECTURE (Bernays)

Prof. Anne Betten, University of Salzburg (Austria)

This year's Bernays Lecture will be given by Professor Anne Betten, University of Salzburg and is entitled:  

"From Cultured German to Family German. Interviews with 1st and 2nd generation German-speaking migrants in Israel".

The lecture will take place at 6pm, Monday 21 March in the Council Room, Strand Campus.
The lecture will be followed by a reception.




 

Music: Sound Park Austria

  Wednesday 6 April 2011, 7.30pm | The Forge

In this concert SPA presents 4 versatile singer-songwriters from Austria and the UK: Amy Smith, Martin Klein, Heidi Vogel and Trouble Over Tokyo.

Amy Smith’s music has been heard on radio (BBC2) and used for theatre and television. Simply Red, Jamie Cullum, Dennis Locorriere, Ray Lamontagne and KD Lang have invited her to perform with, or support them on their tours.

Martin Klein’s 2008 debut album Songs For My Piano received heavy airplay on Austria’s main alternative broadcast radio station FM4, as well as on national radio in the Netherlands, Switzerland and Germany.

In 1995 Heidi Vogel won the ‘Yamaha National Youth Rock and Pop Award’, judged by Phil Collins and Virgin. Since then, she has worked for numerous artists including The Cinematic Orchestra, The Brand New Heavies and Isaac Hayes and performed at the premiere for the film ‘Tomorrow Never Dies’.

English born, Viennese resident Toph Taylor aka Trouble Over Tokyo is due to unleash his latest album The Hurricane in the UK in 2011. His music is most recognized for Taylor’s voice, quirky Alternative/R&B production, and hand-drawn artworks.
